OTPP: Dion Phaneuf Trade, Pierre Dorion and Jim Benning Extensions, and the Olympics

Last Word on Sports is proud to present their hockey podcast, On the Power Play with Ben and Colton. Join Ben Kerr and Colton Praill each week as they take a look at the Hockey World focusing on the big issues of the NHL and elsewhere.

Dion Phaneuf Trade, Pierre Dorion and Jim Benning Extensions, and the Olympics

The Ottawa Senators and Los Angeles Kings got trade deadline season off to a strong start with this week's trade that includes Dion Phaneuf and Marian Gaborik. The boys break it all down and what it means for both clubs. They also look at deeper issues with the Ottawa Senators and the fact that general manager Pierre Dorion has been given a contract extension. What does his history of trades and signings mean for the Sens? The boys also look at a smaller move involving the Sens getting Ville Pokka from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Chris Didomenico.

The Senators provincial rivals, the Toronto Maple Leafs also made a trade. They sent Nikita Soshnikov to the St. Louis Blues for a fourth-round draft pick. What does his future hold in St. Louis? What does the move mean for Josh Leivo and Leo Komarov? What about the fifty contract limit.

The boys also discuss Lars Eller's new contract with the Washington Capitals. They also give their opinion on today's contract extension for Vancouver Canucks general manager Jim Benning. Does he deserve it? Has he improved as a GM? How is his plan to rebuild the Canucks working out?

Lastly, the boys look at the preliminary round games in both the Men's and Women's Olympic tournaments.  What do the results mean and who will take home medals?

All that and more as we go On the Powerplay.

OTPP: Marc-Andre Fleury, Alexandre Burrows, Al Montoya, and Mike Zigomanis

Last Word on Sports is proud to present their hockey podcast, On the Power Play with Ben and Colton. Join Ben Kerr and Colton Praill each week as they take a look at the Hockey World focusing on the big issues of the NHL and elsewhere.

Marc-Andre Fleury, Alexandre Burrows, Al Montoya, and Mike Zigomanis Go On The Power Play

News broke just before we recorded that Alexandre Burrows would be getting a 10-game suspension for his actions against Taylor Hall. Is this lengthy suspension deserved? Will it provide an opportunity for the Ottawa Senators to give some playing time for their youth? Are the Sens running things the right way? Should they call-up more of their young prospects?

The boys also look at Marc-Andre Fleury's return to Pittsburgh. The organization and the fans treated Fleury like a Pittsburgh legend, and he deserved it. Is he missed on this year's Penguins team? Will his number be retired after his career? What do we remember most about his time with the team?

We also saw Al Montoya denying a quote to Ryan Rishaug in a post-game press conference. What led to the situation and how do we feel about Montoya and Rishaug's actions here?

Mike Fisher has returned to the Nashville Predators. What does his addition mean for the team? Can they win the Stanley Cup? What else will they add at the NHL Trade Deadline?

Lastly, Ben turns into a law nerd, and explains Mike Zigomanis' recent court case in the Ontario Court of Appeal, and why he won a decision over Frank D'Angelo and his Cheetah Energy Drink. While Colton is surprised to learn that there are naked pictures of Mike Zigomanis available on the internet and begins frantically searching for them. This causes us to end the show.

All that and more as we go On the Power Play.

Last Word On Habs Pod Episode 14: Trade Deadline and Beyond

Be sure to follow @LWOS_Habs for Habs news, commentary, and analysis.

Fresh off their own All-Star break, Connor and Johannes discuss their feelings on the NHL All-Star game and the NHL schedule. They look ahead to the NHL trade deadline and what the Habs should do, specifically Max Pacioretty and Tomas Plekanec. Our hosts then talk about Marc Bergevin and what an honest Bergevin press conference might sound like. They discuss the need for a VP of Hockey Ops and who the Habs should (or should not) look at to fill the role. They take a look back at the Habs week that was and the Habs week to come. Saturday night P.K. Subban returns to the Bell Centre, how might the fans react his second time through. In the wake of Colton Parayko's hit on Paul Byron, where is the Habs Character?

The podcast wraps up with Connor and Johannes outlining three things they want to see from the Habs for the rest of the season. Then they give their fearless (and very wrong) Super Bowl predictions. Also, hear what is probably on the top of every four-year-old boy's bucket list.

Be sure to listen in!

OTPP: Lebreton Flats, Erik Karlsson, Chronic Fatigued Carey Price and More

The big news of the week comes out of Ottawa. The Lebreton Flats project appears to be moving forward, and the NCC will have their announcement on Thursday. What does this mean for the Ottawa Senators? Can Eugene Melnyk finance the arena? After Pierre Dorion's comments, will Erik Karlsson still be a Senator when it happens?

In other arena news, the New York Islanders could play some games at their old home, Nassau Coliseum, while they wait for their new rink in Belmont Park. What does this mean for fans? How will ticket packages and transportation work? Could the Isles do some other throwbacks?

Meanwhile, reports indicate that Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price was suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome earlier this year? What does this mean for the soon-to-be $10.5 million man? How did the Canadiens handle it?

The Vegas Golden Knights were first overall in the NHL for a brief time earlier this week. Does this change the team's plan to build for the future? What should they do at the NHL Trade Deadline? How Soon is Now?

Could the unthinkable happen? Can the Pittsburgh Penguins and Chicago Blackhawks both miss the playoffs? We break down their playoff chances.

Can the Colorado Avalanche make the playoffs? What went right in their ten-game win streak? Is Nathan MacKinnon a Hart Trophy candidate? How does this team's future look?

OTPP: World Junior Recap, Peter Chiarelli Comments and Marc Bergevin Press Conference

Last Word on Sports is proud to present their hockey podcast, On the Power Play with Ben and Colton. Join Ben Kerr and Colton Praill each week as they take a look around the Hockey World focusing on the big issues of the NHL and elsewhere.

OTPP: World Junior Recap, Peter Chiarelli Comments and Marc Bergevin Press Conference

In this edition of On The Powerplay, we go through the World Juniors, giving our thoughts on who impressed and who didn't in the tournament. Has Rasmus Dahlin secured his spot as the potential first overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft? How good was Casey Mittelstadt in the tournament? What was the difference for Team Canada? What does the tournament mean for Ottawa Senators prospect Drake Batherson? Did Canada deserve to have more players on the tournament all-star team? How valuable was Carter Hart in the tournament? Where are Brady Tkachuk, Evgeni Svechnikov, and Filip Zadina ranked after the tournament?

We also look at Peter Chiarelli's recent comments to the media. Is he right to keep coach Todd McLellan? Who is to blame for the Edmonton Oilers struggles? What can be done to right the ship in Edmonton? Should Chiarelli be the general manager to make those changes?

The Montreal Canadiens are also struggling, and general manager Marc Bergevin had his own press conference. How were his comments received? How much blame does he take for the team's current state? What is happening with Jonathan Drouin? Should the Habs trade Max Pacioretty? What can they expect in return? Who else should they move at the NHL trade deadline? Can they still make the playoffs?

All this and more, as we go On The Power Play.

OTPP: Holiday Edition, World Junior Preview and More

Last Word on Sports is proud to present their hockey podcast, On the Power Play with Ben and Colton. Join Ben Kerr and Colton Praill each week as they take a look around the Hockey World focusing on the big issues of the NHL and elsewhere.

OTPP: Holiday Edition, World Junior Preview and More

Holidays means the World Juniors are about to start. With the tournament in Buffalo, all eyes will be on Sabres top draft pick Casey Mittelstadt. Will the Americans use him at center or wing? Who are the other key players on Team USA.

Meanwhile Canadian eyes will be focused on Carter Hart. The Philadelphia Flyers prospect is putting up a ridiculous .961 save percentage for Everett in the WHL. Can he be the best goalie in the tournament and lead Canada to gold? Do the Canadians have enough offence? Is Sam Steel or Robert Thomas the number one centre?

Meanwhile, The Finns have five first rounders on their blue line and a strong group up front. The Czechs have a number of top forwards including Martin NecasRasmus Dahlin leads the Swedes, and Andrei Svechnikov will be a key part of Team Russia. Denmark is looking for another upset. Switzerland has another potential top-five pick (this one for 2019). Slovakia brings strong goaltending to the tournament. Belarus remains the plucky underdog. We have a full World Junior Preview.

NHL News

The New York Islanders have a new arena plan. They are headed back to Long Island, with their new building going at Belmont Park. What does this mean for their attempt to keep John Tavares?

Meanwhile, the boys look at the surprises around the league. Can the Vegas Golden Knights keep winning? What about the New Jersey Devils? Are the Winnipeg Jets for real? What is happening with the Dallas Stars?

OTPP: Carey Price Returns, Matt Duchene Struggles, Carey Price Confounds

Last Word on Sports is proud to present their hockey podcast, On the Power Play with Ben and Colton. Join Ben Kerr and Colton Praill each week as they take a look around the Hockey World focusing on the big issues of the NHL and elsewhere.

OTPP: Meet Our New Co-Host

Our former co-host Dave Gove has gone back to school. While he no longer has the time to podcast every week, he will be back as a guest. After several weeks of hiatus, as Ben searched far and wide for a new co-host though, we have finally found someone worthy of the OTPP shoes. Welcome Colton Praill to the madhouse.

Carey Price Returns

Carey Price has put together two strong games. Can the Montreal Canadiens breathe easier and start to climb up the standings? Can he mask the team's holes? Is their any NHL player more important to their team?

Matt Duchene Struggles

In eight games since being traded to the Ottawa Senators, Matt Duchene has just one goal, no assists and is a -10. The team is also struggling. What is happening with Duchene? What is happening with the Senators? How does Erik Karlsson look after his ankle surgery?

Kris Russell Confounds

The Edmonton Oilers were supposed to be contenders. However, they have struggled out of the gate.  Colton and Ben break down the reasons.  They look at the blue line, the play of Cam Talbot, the off-season moves of Peter Chiarelli and more. They also get into the team's cap crunch, and what the Kris Russell and Milan Lucic contracts mean going forward. Is Ryan Nugent-Hopkins destined to be traded? What will be the return?

Injuries and New Age Thinking

Our hosts finish up by talking about goalie injuries. The discussion ends up leading to a discussion of modern training, plyometrics, acrobatics, yoga, and GPS-based monitoring systems. Is this the cutting edge of hockey? How can teams take advantage?

All this and more as we go On the Powerplay.
