OTPP: NHL Off-Season

Last Word on Sports is proud to present their hockey podcast, On the Power Play with Ben and Dave. Join Ben Kerr and Dave Gove each week as they take a look around the Hockey World focusing on the big issues of the NHL and elsewhere.

OTPP: NHL Off-Season Review

Today on On The Powerplay, we look at the best and worst teams this NHL off-season.

Advanced stats suggest the Carolina Hurricanes had the best off-season. What are the Hurricanes getting and what does it mean? Can Scott Darling solve the goaltending issues?

The Dallas Stars had big pick-ups. Does Ben Bishop fix their goaltending? Where do Alexander Radulov and Martin Hanzal fit? Can Marc Methot shore up the defence or is more needed.

The Washington Capitals took major hits this off-season. How good will they be without Kevin Shattenkirk, Karl Alzner, Nate Schmidt, Marcus Johansson, and Justin Williams?

Can the Chicago Blackhawks recover from their losses, especially on the blue-line?

The New York Rangers upgraded the blue line, but down graded up front. What does it mean?

What is Marc Bergevin doing for the Montreal Canadiens?

Does Patrick Marleau improve the Toronto Maple Leafs? How much? What is going on with their cap?

All this and more as we go On the Power Play.

OTPP: NHL Off-Season, Expansion Draft, Entry Draft, Trades

Last Word on Sports is proud to present their hockey podcast, On the Power Play with Ben and Dave. Join Ben Kerr and Dave Gove each week as they take a look around the Hockey World focusing on the big issues of the NHL and elsewhere.

OTPP: NHL Off-Season, Expansion Draft, Entry Draft, Trades

We are just a few days into the NHL Off-Season and its already been very busy as general managers look to re-stock talent.

The Montreal Canadiens acquired Jonathan Drouin from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for top prospect Mikhail Sergachev. Where does he fit? Does he solve the Habs offensive woes. Why is Tampa making the deal and what are they getting? Will Sergachev play this year?

The Calgary Flames added Mike Smith from Arizona. Does he finally solve their goaltending issues? What did the Coyotes get in the deal. Who will be the Coyotes goaltender next year?

Jordan Eberle is a New York Islander and Ryan Strome is an Edmonton Oiler.  Does the change of scenery help both players?

The boys also look at the Vegas Golden Knights and their new roster after the Expansion Draft. What will their team look like? What was the strategy? Who stays and who goes in trade flips? What trades and picks hurt teams and what teams lost the least?

They also examine the NHL Awards.  What were the best and worst moments of the show? Whose votes should be questioned?

The boys finally wrap it all up with an NHL Entry Draft preview.  Nico or Nolan? Who else is out there? Who are Ben's sleepers?

All this and more as we go On the Power Play.

GTD: What’s Wrong With the Washington Capitals

GTD: What's Wrong With the Washington Capitals

The showdown between the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins was the series most hockey fans were looking forward to. Unfortunately to this point, the series has been heavily one-sided and as result, it's left the Capitals in a 3-1 hole. The issue is, where does the blame lay? As the guys discuss, it's difficult to point to one individual player, or ever a group of forwards that have significantly underperformed. But perhaps that word, forward, is the keyword. Washington's blueline, while not lackluster, simply hasn't performed to it's fullest potential. Trade-deadline acquisition Kevin Shattenkirk stands out as the player who has impressed the least. Even then, can the series really fall at the feel of a single player? Does blame fall on head coach Barry Trotz? It's a difficult question to answer, and one the guys spend serious time mulling over.

Can The Senators Hang On Against New York

From one Eastern Conference series to another, the question has to be asked about the Ottawa Senators: can they really defeat the Rangers? It took a miraculous four goal performance from Jean-Gabriel Pageau in game two to top the blueshirts, and the Sens were lifeless in game three. If Ottawa wants to have shot at bringing home Lord Stanley's cup, they'll need to find a way to deal with the speed, and aggressive forecheck that has wrought havok upon them in the last two games. Game four will be one for the ages at MSG.

Predators Are Picking Up Speed

Is there any team in the post-season that has looked as good as Nashville has. Perhaps the Penguins are the answer to that question, but without doubt, Nashville looks like the team to beat in the Western Conference. They appear set to make the finals in just nine games, only the second team to do so in the last three years, and against tough opposition as well. They stormed through Chicago, and now the Blues are crumbling under the speed, and transition of this Predators offense. Or perhaps more accurately this Predators defence. Ryan Ellis, and the rest of the blueliners have been key this series, and the guys discuss if they can continue to direct the play in the manner they have so far.
