Last Word on Habs Pod – Episode 18 (Habs Living Wake)

The Last Word on Habs Pod is brought to you by the Last Word on Sports Network. Co-hosted by the LWOH Montreal Canadiens team manager Connor Lapalme and Johannes Wheeldon, it is a weekly look at the Habs and features guests from the Last Word on Sports community and others. Join us for smart takes, controversial opinions, and news you can use about the Montreal Canadiens.

This week Connor and Johannes discuss why there was no show last week. To make up for missing last week, our hosts look to provide two times the entertainment to their listeners this week.

As for the Habs, our hosts look back on the two weeks since the Trade Deadline. Connor worries if the Habs will go on a useless run to pull themselves out off a prime draft position. Johannes wants to know about how the rest of the year will play out in the Montreal media as pundits are starting to express their opinions on the Habs. Johannes, with the help of hindsight, wonders why Marc Bergevin was in such a rush to announce Carey Price's extension last offseason. Connor thinks it might have been a form of damage control after missing out on free agents.

The focus then shifts, as usual, to Geoff Molson and Marc Bergevin. Our hosts try to find out why Geoff Molson is comfortable keeping Bergevin around after missing the playoffs two of the last three years. Our hosts discuss if there is a path to redemption for Bergevin. Johannes wonders what unhappy fans can do to convince Molson that Bergevin should be ousted.

Do the Canadiens know how to maximize their assets? Our hosts discuss if the Habs are good at setting up their players for success. They focus on Jonathan Drouin and Alex Galchenyuk and why the team continues to play them out of position and expect greatness.

All this and baby talk, a look to free agency, did Max Pacioretty ask for a trade at the deadline and an honest take on how much Habs we will be watching down the stretch.

Tune in!

OTPP: Trade Deadline Show

Last Word on Sports is proud to present their hockey podcast, On the Power Play with Ben and Colton. Join Ben Kerr and Colton Praill each week as they take a look at the Hockey World focusing on the big issues of the NHL and elsewhere.

Paul Stastny, Ryan McDonagh, Rick Nash, Tomas Plekanec, and the Rest of the Big Deals at the NHL Trade Deadline

We start off with the most surprising move of the day, as Paul Stastny joins the Winnipeg Jets. Are the Jets true Cup Contenders? Are the St. Louis Blues giving up on the season? What does this move mean for the landscape of the Western Conference?

Out east, the Tampa Bay Lightning picked up Ryan McDonagh and J.T. Miller from the New York Rangers. Are they the new Stanley Cup favorites? How did the Rangers do in the deal?

Patrick Maroon only gets a third and c-level prospect from the New Jersey Devils. Did Peter Chiarelli make another error?

Is Rick Nash the piece the Boston Bruins needed? Did they give up too much? How does the trade compare to the Columbus Blue Jackets acquisition of Thomas Vanek?

The Toronto Maple Leafs added Habs forward Tomas Plekanec. What does this mean for each of the rivals?

Other big moves include Tomas Tatar, Ryan Hartman, Evander Kane, and Derick Brassard. Do they put their teams over the top?

They also look at the moves that didn't happen. Why did the Detroit Red Wings keep Mike Green? What is next for Max Pacioretty, Mike Hoffman, and of course Erik Karlsson?

The boys also discuss the Olympics. How do they feel about the Olympic Athletes from Russia and Germany facing off in the Gold Medal Game? What about the Women's Tournament and a gold medal for the United States?

All this and more as we go on the power play.

OTPP: Dion Phaneuf Trade, Pierre Dorion and Jim Benning Extensions, and the Olympics

Last Word on Sports is proud to present their hockey podcast, On the Power Play with Ben and Colton. Join Ben Kerr and Colton Praill each week as they take a look at the Hockey World focusing on the big issues of the NHL and elsewhere.

Dion Phaneuf Trade, Pierre Dorion and Jim Benning Extensions, and the Olympics

The Ottawa Senators and Los Angeles Kings got trade deadline season off to a strong start with this week's trade that includes Dion Phaneuf and Marian Gaborik. The boys break it all down and what it means for both clubs. They also look at deeper issues with the Ottawa Senators and the fact that general manager Pierre Dorion has been given a contract extension. What does his history of trades and signings mean for the Sens? The boys also look at a smaller move involving the Sens getting Ville Pokka from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Chris Didomenico.

The Senators provincial rivals, the Toronto Maple Leafs also made a trade. They sent Nikita Soshnikov to the St. Louis Blues for a fourth-round draft pick. What does his future hold in St. Louis? What does the move mean for Josh Leivo and Leo Komarov? What about the fifty contract limit.

The boys also discuss Lars Eller's new contract with the Washington Capitals. They also give their opinion on today's contract extension for Vancouver Canucks general manager Jim Benning. Does he deserve it? Has he improved as a GM? How is his plan to rebuild the Canucks working out?

Lastly, the boys look at the preliminary round games in both the Men's and Women's Olympic tournaments.  What do the results mean and who will take home medals?

All that and more as we go On the Powerplay.

OTPP: Marc-Andre Fleury, Alexandre Burrows, Al Montoya, and Mike Zigomanis

Last Word on Sports is proud to present their hockey podcast, On the Power Play with Ben and Colton. Join Ben Kerr and Colton Praill each week as they take a look at the Hockey World focusing on the big issues of the NHL and elsewhere.

Marc-Andre Fleury, Alexandre Burrows, Al Montoya, and Mike Zigomanis Go On The Power Play

News broke just before we recorded that Alexandre Burrows would be getting a 10-game suspension for his actions against Taylor Hall. Is this lengthy suspension deserved? Will it provide an opportunity for the Ottawa Senators to give some playing time for their youth? Are the Sens running things the right way? Should they call-up more of their young prospects?

The boys also look at Marc-Andre Fleury's return to Pittsburgh. The organization and the fans treated Fleury like a Pittsburgh legend, and he deserved it. Is he missed on this year's Penguins team? Will his number be retired after his career? What do we remember most about his time with the team?

We also saw Al Montoya denying a quote to Ryan Rishaug in a post-game press conference. What led to the situation and how do we feel about Montoya and Rishaug's actions here?

Mike Fisher has returned to the Nashville Predators. What does his addition mean for the team? Can they win the Stanley Cup? What else will they add at the NHL Trade Deadline?

Lastly, Ben turns into a law nerd, and explains Mike Zigomanis' recent court case in the Ontario Court of Appeal, and why he won a decision over Frank D'Angelo and his Cheetah Energy Drink. While Colton is surprised to learn that there are naked pictures of Mike Zigomanis available on the internet and begins frantically searching for them. This causes us to end the show.

All that and more as we go On the Power Play.

OTPP: World Junior Recap, Peter Chiarelli Comments and Marc Bergevin Press Conference

Last Word on Sports is proud to present their hockey podcast, On the Power Play with Ben and Colton. Join Ben Kerr and Colton Praill each week as they take a look around the Hockey World focusing on the big issues of the NHL and elsewhere.

OTPP: World Junior Recap, Peter Chiarelli Comments and Marc Bergevin Press Conference

In this edition of On The Powerplay, we go through the World Juniors, giving our thoughts on who impressed and who didn't in the tournament. Has Rasmus Dahlin secured his spot as the potential first overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft? How good was Casey Mittelstadt in the tournament? What was the difference for Team Canada? What does the tournament mean for Ottawa Senators prospect Drake Batherson? Did Canada deserve to have more players on the tournament all-star team? How valuable was Carter Hart in the tournament? Where are Brady Tkachuk, Evgeni Svechnikov, and Filip Zadina ranked after the tournament?

We also look at Peter Chiarelli's recent comments to the media. Is he right to keep coach Todd McLellan? Who is to blame for the Edmonton Oilers struggles? What can be done to right the ship in Edmonton? Should Chiarelli be the general manager to make those changes?

The Montreal Canadiens are also struggling, and general manager Marc Bergevin had his own press conference. How were his comments received? How much blame does he take for the team's current state? What is happening with Jonathan Drouin? Should the Habs trade Max Pacioretty? What can they expect in return? Who else should they move at the NHL trade deadline? Can they still make the playoffs?

All this and more, as we go On The Power Play.
