OTPP: NHL Off-Season Frenzy

Last Word on Sports is proud to present their hockey podcast, On the Powerplay with Ben and Dave. Join Ben Kerr and Dave Gove each week as they take a look around the Hockey World focusing on the big issues of the NHL and elsewhere.

This week the boys get into the NHL Off-season frenzy. We have seen big name stars on the move, both in trades and as free agents. Dave and Ben examine each move.

This Week's Show

NHL general managers did not wait for July 1st to get their off-season shopping started. The big moves started on June 29th as there were two big trades and a massive free-agent signing. The Edmonton Oilers traded Taylor Hall to the New Jersey Devils for Adam Larson. This was quickly followed by the Montreal Canadiens trading P.K. Subban to the Nashville Predators for Shea Weber. Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Lightning locked up Steven Stamkos to an eight-year deal. What do the boys think of the moves?

On July 1st, teams spent money like it was going out of style. Andrew Ladd, Dan Hamhuis, Kyle OkposoEric Staal, Milan Lucic, Frans Nielsen, Loui Eriksson, David Backes, and Troy Brouwer were just some of the names finding new homes. Meanwhile, the Montreal Canadiens shocked many by bringing Alexander Radulov back from the KHL. Who got good value and who overspent in the frenzy? The boys let give you their take.

Some other big names such as Kris Russell, Justin Schultz, Alex Tanguay, Jiri Hudler, and Vadim Shipachyov remain on the market. Where do the boys think they will go, and who is the best remaining free agent?

All this and more as we go On The Powerplay.

Matt Pollard is a Chemical Engineering Grad Student and Staff Writer for the MLS department at Last Word on Sports. When he’s not playing with fire, he’s going for a run, trying a microbrewery, or watching sports. His first sports love was the LA Kings, though MLS didn’t exist at the time. Once called the Shakespeare of the department, he describes himself as a typical tuba playing Ginger Ninja, Environmental Crusader, Sports Hipster, and Miami Hurricane. Like the Galaxy, he too was handcrafted in LA

Alec Rivera is a Major League Soccer Editor at Last Word on Sports; a longtime fan of both the sport and the league, he has been delighted to cover D.C. United as a writer for the past several months. He grew up playing soccer from the age of three and, for the longest time, refused to even acknowledge any other sport except in passing. Nowadays, he is not so discriminatory to the lesser sports. Except hockey. Because ice makes him cold. #VamosUnited #GoNats #GoRavens #GoWizards #DCrising

Russ “Big Mick” McKenzie is the head of the MLS department at Last Word on Sports, and has spent a tremendous amount of time on the radio in the past, with WSIA 88.9 NY, WZBT 91.1 PA, and has own independent podcast, The Psychedelic Toaster Show.
